Short answer: Renters insurance covers your belongings and your personal liability when you rent a home or apartment. Your landlord's policy usually protects the building, not your things. At The Ritz Agency in Ocala, we help renters across Marion County compare options and set limits that fit what they actually own.
Anyone renting a home, apartment, duplex or condo, whether you're a first-time renter, a family, a roommate group or someone downsizing. If you'd have to replace your furniture, clothes, electronics and kitchen gear out of pocket after a fire or a break-in, renters insurance is worth a look.
Coverage varies from policy to policy. We'll walk you through the exclusions and sublimits so there are no surprises.
Marion County renters live in everything from apartments off Silver Springs Boulevard to duplexes in Belleview, houses in Summerfield and small homes near the Rainbow River in Dunnellon. Our office is on E Silver Springs Blvd in Ocala, so you can stop in, bring a list of what you own and sit down with someone who knows the area. If you rent in Lady Lake or in The Villages area, we can help there too.
Florida's storm season matters for renters. Wind damage from a hurricane or tropical storm is a common covered peril on renters policies, but rising water usually isn't. That gap is why we always talk about flood with renters, and why it's smart to decide before a storm is in the forecast. Our Florida hurricane season insurance checklist has a simple prep list.

Usually not. A landlord's policy is generally written to protect the landlord's building, not your furniture, clothes or electronics. Renters insurance is the policy that covers your own personal property. Check your lease and your landlord's policy to see what applies to you.
According to the Florida Department of Financial Services, renters insurance can cover your personal property against named perils such as fire, windstorm or hail, theft and vandalism, plus loss of use (additional living expenses if you can't live at home after a covered loss) and personal liability. Policies differ, so we go through yours line by line.
Many policies have special limits on items like jewelry, firearms, furs, cash, cameras, art or antiques. If you own pieces worth more than those limits, ask us about scheduled personal property, which lists specific items so they can be covered for more.
Standard renters policies generally don't. The Florida Department of Financial Services says flood coverage may sometimes be added by endorsement, and otherwise a separate flood policy can be bought. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation notes that flood coverage is available to renters. Flood policies often have a waiting period, so don't wait for a storm.
Loss of use coverage (often called additional living expenses) can reimburse reasonable extra costs, like temporary housing, while a covered loss makes your home unlivable. Keep your receipts. Coverage depends on your policy and the cause of the loss.
